For last 13-14 years, we haven’t seen any wicket-keeper batsman wearing gloves behind the wicket wearing the blue color as regular as Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Dinesh Karthik, Robin Uthappa, Vriddhiman Saha, KL Rahul, Rishab Pant and so on, India was able to produce good wicket-keeper batsmen in meantime but none came close to the class of MS Dhoni. In other words, even good wicketkeepers and batsman at the same time struggled to find themselves in the squad while Dhoni cemented his place.
Today, there is a section of cricket critics with a demand to find the replacement for MS Dhoni keeping the future requirements in mind. They say 36 Dhoni playing in T20’s is not acceptable as he will not be playing the next T20 world cup. However, he is still the best choice for ODI’s since he confirmed playing the 2019 ODI world cup. Well, India’s former captain Sourav Ganguly has another option along with Dhoni. It’s Vriddhiman Saha, the Indian test wicketkeeper whom Ganguly rates as a better wicketkeeper than MS Dhoni.
“I think Dhoni will continue till 2019 World Cup. The best part for Dhoni is Virat Kohli wants him. He’s 36 and he’s not the flamboyant MS Dhoni that we saw in Pakistan in 2004 but he’s a different player now. Kohli needs him not just as a keeper but in the leadership capacity as well; he has got the best view behind the stumps. MS Dhoni is different, not the orthodox one but you need to be different to be successful and he has that. He has learned his craft with time but we must keep an eye on Wriddhiman Saha. He’s better than him at wicket-keeping, the best in the country right now. He bats at 6 or 7 for India so must keep an eye on him,” Ganguly said as quoted by India Today.
What is your view on this? Should Saha be considered for 2019 ODI world cup along with Dhoni? Is he really a better wicketkeeper than Dhoni?
